The Ruko headquarters is situated at Rugus on the east of the conservancy. 10 community scouts have been employed to carry-out daily patrols of the conservancy of which 4 scouts are permanently based at the 188 acre Sanctuary. Operating on one solar-powered base radio (manned by two female community scouts) with 9 handheld radios, all scouts actively report and monitor all human and wildlife activities; all data is then presented to NRT and the KWS. Two additional radios have also been entrusted to the community members to help in security and communication.
Assets the Ruko scouts have acquired include one boat donated by Tusk Trust through Lewa marathon which is used for marine patrols and administrative logistics, in addition to two motorbikes used for research and wildlife monitoring as well as major anti-poaching patrols which occur on a daily basis to further increase wildlife protection.
